Bridging the Connectivity Gap to Empower the Next Generation of Data-Driven Farmers
The landscape of African agriculture is undergoing a profound digital transformation. In a landmark collaboration, space solutions leader SES and IoT provider Advannotech have joined forces with the Enterprising Africa Regional Network (EARN) to bring high-tech, precision farming to South Africa’s emerging agricultural leaders.
For many remote agribusinesses, traditional guesswork has been the standard, watering crops on a fixed schedule regardless of actual soil needs. This approach not only risks crop health but also wastes vital resources like water and electricity.
Through a successful three-month proof-of-concept at a climate-smart training farm in Centurion, this project has proven that the transition to data-driven decision-making is no longer a luxury, but a necessity. By utilizing IoT sensors over LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network), farmers can now monitor soil moisture, CO2 levels, humidity, and temperature in real-time.
One of the primary hurdles for rural AgTech has been inconsistent cellular connectivity. This project bypasses terrestrial limitations by connecting sensors directly to a cloud-based backend via SES’s satellite network.
This always-on connectivity ensures that farmers receive instant alerts on their mobile devices when environmental conditions change, enabling immediate intervention. Whether it is conserving water in drought-prone regions or optimizing yields through precise nutrient management, the integration of satellite-enabled IoT is a game-changer for sustainability.
This initiative is deeply rooted in human capital. By integrating this technology into the African Greeneurs program, young farmers are gaining hands-on experience with the tools that will define the future of the continent’s food security.
As Africa continues to position itself as a global agricultural powerhouse, the connection of space technology and ground-level innovation ensures that the next generation of farmers is equipped to lead with precision, efficiency, and resilience.
