In a move set to redefine the future of enterprise technology, Qualcomm Technologies has announced the launch of its groundbreaking Dragonwing™ Q-6690 processor, the world’s first enterprise mobile processor with fully integrated ultra-high frequency (UHF) RFID capabilities. Announced at an event in Dubai, this innovation promises to accelerate digital transformation across industries from retail and logistics to manufacturing.
For years, devices requiring RFID have relied on external reader modules, adding to their bulk and complexity. The Dragonwing Q-6690 changes this by embedding RFID directly into the processor itself, enabling the design of smaller, more efficient devices. This integration not only streamlines manufacturing but also paves the way for a new era of contactless use cases like real-time inventory management, secure access control, and product authentication.
The processor’s true power lies in its ability to combine integrated RFID with on-device AI and a full suite of next-gen wireless technologies, including built-in 5G, Wi-Fi 7, and ultra-wideband (UWB). This powerful combination allows edge devices like rugged handhelds, smart kiosks, and point-of-sale systems to become smarter and more proximity-aware, providing real-time analytics and richer, more personalized experiences.
The Dragonwing Q-6690 combines integrated RFID, AI, and next-gen wireless capabilities in a single, scalable platform, designed to accelerate innovation, said Art Miller, vice president and head of retail at Qualcomm Technologies. “We are particularly excited about working with retailers that need platforms that are not only powerful and connected but also adaptable to evolving customer expectations.”
The impact of this technology is already being felt across key industries. Decathlon, a global sporting goods retailer that has been a pioneer in RFID adoption, sees the new processor as a game changer. Hervé D’Halluin, Leader RFID & TRACEABILITY at Decathlon, stated that the new capabilities will “maximize our operational efficiency, amplify smarter in-store customer experience and support our sustainability goals through enhanced product traceability.”
EssilorLuxottica also highlighted the potential for consumer engagement, with its Head of Business Process Innovation, Fabio Napol, commenting that the new chip, paves the way for scalable, stylish and design-forward solutions, delivering superior, consumer-centric experiences that set new benchmarks for the industry.
A key feature for manufacturers is the processor’s software-configurable feature packs, which allow OEMs to tailor devices to specific needs and update features over the air. This modular approach extends product lifecycles and provides a level of flexibility that reduces time to market and certification overhead.
Qualcomm’s latest innovation represents a seismic shift, as described by Aileen Ryan, President and CEO of the RAIN Alliance, that will democratize the Internet of Things, reshape industries and create entirely new markets. With commercial devices from leading OEMs like Zebra, Honeywell, and Urovo expected in the coming months, the Dragonwing Q-6690 is set to become a foundational technology in the ongoing digital transformation of the enterprise world.
