The future of Artificial Intelligence in Africa just took a massive step forward. On May 18, 2026, the AI Skills and Compute Africa Foundation (AISCA Foundation) officially launched in Kigali, Rwanda, with a mission to dismantle the barriers currently hindering the continent’s AI ecosystem.
Backed by seed funding from Cassava Technologies, the AISCA Foundation is designed to move Africa from being a consumer of AI to a creator, ensuring that the next wave of technological innovation is developed by Africans, for Africans.

For many African researchers and innovators, the primary barrier to building world-class AI is the lack of affordable, local computing power. The AISCA Foundation is tackling this head-on by providing equitable access to compute resources, skills development, and research support.
The Foundation’s strategy is built on four core pillars that address the entire AI value chain:
- Sovereign Compute: Partnering with Cassava Technologies to provide localized infrastructure, ensuring that data and processing power remain within African borders.
- Curated Data: Developing high-quality datasets tailored to African realities in critical sectors like agriculture, healthcare, and climate resilience.
- Capacity Building: Scaling AI education across the continent to create a pipeline of skilled professionals.
- Community: Building a pan-African network to mentor and support top-tier technical talent.
The Foundation has set clear, measurable targets to drive inclusive growth:
- Transitioning 1 million youth into dignified economic opportunities within the AI sector.
- Awarding 25,000 compute grants to AI Native Innovators building local solutions.
- Supporting 10,000 AI researchers with technical assistance to advance cutting-edge studies.
As Dr. Agnes Kalibata, Chairperson of the AISCA Board, aptly stated: “Africa must begin developing technologies that respond to its own challenges rather than relying on imported solutions that often fail to address local needs.”
By rooting AI innovation in African priorities and providing the necessary infrastructure, the AISCA Foundation is positioning Kigali and the continent at large as a formidable hub for digital transformation and frontier technology.
